4. Confidence is essential with goalkeepers

Arrizabalaga was statistically the worst goalkeeper in Europe by the end of the 2019/20 season. His confidence was dropping drastically the more he started games. The spotlight did not help him either as his performances were scrutinized even more as the weeks went on. The final dent in his confidence was Chelsea dipping into the market for Mendy, a decision that was necessary at the time. All of this meant that Arrizabalaga was now the second choice goalkeeper for his club and country, despite being the most expensive shot-stopper transfer in the history of the sport. Mendy played all but a few Premier League games in Frank Lampard’s second season, and by the time he was sacked, Arrizabalaga had no hope of redemption as a Blues employee.

In comes new manager Thomas Tuchel, and the first thing he made clear to the public was that Chelsea had two very strong goalkeepers that he trusted completely. The German made this clear with his statements and his actions, going on to reward Arrizabalaga’s good performances with more starts. This built up Arrizabalaga’s confidence gradually. The ultimate vote of confidence was Tuchel taking off Mendy for Arrizabalaga for the UEFA Super Cup penalty shootout, a shootout Chelsea won with the Spaniard saving two penalties. This confidence has played its role in the former Athletic Bilbao goalie stepping into the role of first choice goalkeeper in the absence of Mendy and performing brilliantly. It was much of the same from him against Al Hilal.
