Chelsea has been at the forefront of any and all football news over the last few days due to its affiliation to Russia. The Eastern European country began an all-out attack on neighboring Ukraine earlier this week, much to the displeasure of a majority of the planet. The war has taken center stage in every news cycle around the globe during this week as the eyes of the world are on the European continent. While footballers and other athletes across the world come together to voice their opposition to the heinous acts carried out by Russia, many have waited for the Blues to say anything about the conflict.

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel was thrown to the wolves during his press conference on Friday as he became the first club employee to speak on the subject. He was bombarded with questions about club owner Roman Abramovich, the Blues’ undeniable link to Russia and how it impacted his squad’s preparation for the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool on Sunday. Tuchel gave a handful of honest and respectable answers, not holding back his belief that it was a distraction to his staff and players. The team’s owner obviously heard the message loud and clear.

Abramovich stunned the world on Saturday as he released a statement via the club’s website:

"“During my nearly 20-year ownership of Chelsea FC, I have always viewed my role as a custodian of the Club, whose job it is ensuring that we are as successful as we can be today, as well as build for the future, while also playing a positive role in our communities. I have always taken decisions with the Club’s best interest at heart. I remain committed to these values. That is why I am today giving trustees of Chelsea’s charitable Foundation the stewardship and care of Chelsea FC. I believe that currently they are in the best position to look after the interests of the Club, players, staff, and fans.”"

This 110-word press release, albeit brief, was powerful as it represents the first time the Russian is relinquishing any sort of power as owner since taking over in June 2003. Nevertheless, the brevity of the announcement left a lot of supporters confused about not only the future of their beloved football club, but also its present. Let’s analyze this complex situation from every angle.
