3. What does Roman Abramovich’s decision mean right now?

We’ve already discussed what Abramovich’s decision means right now for those behind the scenes. However, perhaps those most heavily impacted by his choice are the players. Tuchel and his men are some of only individuals who are essentially required to speak to the media on a regular basis. Therefore, they will have to answer endless questions regarding Abramovich for as long as the war in Ukraine rages on. Is it fair? Absolutely not, which is one of the reasons the Russian owner stepped away. He cannot put a stop to all media questioning, but he can take necessary steps to minimize the inquiries.

Furthermore, it is plausible that we could now see more club employees—be it players, coaches or anyone else who is employed by the reigning World Champions—speak out about the issue. One doesn’t need to look hard to see examples of people all across the globe protesting in unique ways or showing their support for the Ukrainian citizens. However, there has been radio silence coming from the Blues’ camp thus far and it’s hardly a secret as to why that’s the case.

This is a fragile situation all around, especially considering the fragility of Putin’s ego. Abramovich has walked a fine, neutral line up until this point but his removal from the equation allows players the freedom they need to speak out. That’s not to suggest Abramovich was demanding silence from his staff, it was just a smart move for all involved parties up until this point.

There have been reputable rumors stating that there is planning taking place for a pre-match demonstration by both clubs ahead of the Carabao Cup final at Wembley Stadium on Sunday. It would have been incredibly awkward to see the Blues be one of the only professional teams in any sport over the last few days not supporting Ukrainians. On the flip side, it would’ve been even more weird to see Chelsea players stand in support of Ukraine if Abramovich had not chosen to step away. There is no guarantee the Blues will partake in any demonstrations in support of the victims in Ukraine, it’s just an inference, Abramovich’s temporary “resignation” (for lack of a better term) has just made it possible. As for the daily football operations—such as personnel and transfer decisions—those powers will remain with Granovskaia and Cech.
