Chelsea 4-0 Burnley player ratings: Kai Havertz brace inspires Blues
Mateo Kovacic (Central midfielder): 6.5/10
Kovacic was subbed on in the 74′ for Kante and at that point, the game was 4-0. There was not much left work to do when the Croatian came on. Suffice to say, after being exhausted during the Liverpool final, Kovacic earned this easy shift. He was his usual self in the midfield, being robust and assertive. He never needed to do to much and showed why he is a true mature player.
Ruben Loftus-Cheek (Right wingback): 6/10
Chelsea’s newest centerback made his appearance in the 74′, being subbed on for James. He played at right wingback, showing even more of his versatility. When Ruben Loftus-Cheek got on the ball, he tried to impress and get down that right wing. In a few instances, he was stopped by Burnley’s defenders. Again, at this point of the game, there wasn’t much to do, so he also had an easy shift. It will be interesting to see if Tuchel features RLC in more games down the stretch.
Timo Werner (Left winger): 6/10
Sixes for all of the subs! The German came on and replaced Mount in the 79′. Once he came on, he complemented his compatriot, joining Havertz along the front line. His only real action came in the 85′ when he struggled to get his shot away against a couple Burnley defenders. Other than that, it was a regular substitute appearance for Werner.
Thomas Tuchel (Manager): 7.5/10
Tuchel has had a busy week preparing the team following the recent rumors of the reported sale of the club by Roman Abramovich. Nevertheless, it was back to action and business as usual for Tuchel and his team. He was brave in his selection again as he started Havertz at center forward over Romelu Lukaku. Interestingly, Saul got the nod at left wingback.
During the first half, the team was a bit stale and bereft of ideas as to how to attack Burnley. This all changed when Tuchel made the tactical change in the second half to place Mount in the midfield. This allowed Chelsea to move the ball quicker and created more space for Pulisic to roam in the final third. It also opened more space for James to bomb down that right wing. It ultimately resulted in an opening goal for James, great link up play between Havertz and Pulisic and goals for both. Tuchel also made careful substitutions by continuing to protect James and Kante. Overall, the game started slow but great adjustments from the manager were impressive.
