This Sunday, two sides who reside at the different ends of the spectrum in terms of team morale and the feeling within the club clash at Stamford Bridge. With the government recently imposing sanctions on Roman Abramovich, the future of the club is uncertain as it can now not sell any of its merchandise or match tickets to supporters. On top of this, Chelsea is barred from signing players to new contracts, putting the futures of players like Cesar Azpilicueta, Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger in jeopardy. Despite the announcement of sanctions being imposed on the Russian owner, the Blues rallied together and earned all three points against the Canaries midweek. Even with so many off-the-field issues, they have not let that impact their results and currently are on a run of four consecutive wins in the Premier League.

Newcastle, on the other hand, is also flying high. After the Toons’ embarrassing defeat at the hands of League One side Cambridge United in the third round of the FA Cup, the Magpies are eight games unbeaten in the Premier League, taking them 10 points clear of the relegation spots.  A lot of credit needs to be given to the Newcastle manager Eddie Howe for revitalizing the team and helping players like Joelinton and Jonjo Shelvey rediscover their form. Some credit should also be given to the board for bringing in the right players in the January transfer window. The likes of Dan Burns, Matt Targett and Kieran Trippier have helped out the team, who was leaking goals left, right and center earlier this season.

The last time these two teams met, Chelsea swept Newcastle aside at St. James’ Park, winning the match 3-0. Historically, the Blues have been the far superior side, winning the last nine home meetings against the Toons in all competition. Nevertheless, the renewed hope in this Newcastle side can pose some issues for the European Champions.
