Chelsea nominated for numerous Premier League awards
It’s been nothing if not an entertaining month around SW6. The international break may have just begun, but the Blues are still hard at work as they try to tweak the special license granted to the club by the government. The Raine Group is utilizing this time to fast-track the sale of Chelsea amidst the government’s sanctions, as well. For those who are tired of hearing about Roman Abramovich, the club’s sale and 1,000 different consortiums, fear not.
Not all of the headlines surrounding the club at this moment in time are negative, even though it often feels that way. A handful of Blues legends were nominated to become inductees into the exclusive Premier League Hall of Fame for 2022. This distinguished list includes greats like Petr Cech, Ashley Cole, Didier Drogba and John Terry. The accolades continued to trickle in on Thursday morning as members of the team were put up for March’s monthly Premier League awards too.
Chelsea has been nominated for numerous Premier League awards for March
Beginning with the EA Sports Player of the Month award, Chelsea is represented by both Trevoh Chalobah and Kai Havertz. The former played a huge role in helping his team keep two clean sheets in three games. He played all 270 minutes in March, including a massive 90-minute shift at right back against Newcastle when all other fullback options were sidelined for various reasons. In addition to his defensive contributions, Chalobah chipped in with an important opening goal against Norwich City and an assist at Burnley.
Havertz, on the other hand, is a favorite to win the monthly award due to his scorching form. The German wunderkind scored four goals (two at Burnley, one at Norwich, one vs. Newcastle) in the three games he played in, tacking on an assist against the Canaries. These goals were massive for the Blues’ position in the league table as Mikel Arteta’s red-hot Arsenal began to creep up. Havertz has helped Chelsea maintain a healthy gap between itself and fellow top four challengers.
Chalobah and Havertz were also given special Player of the Month cards in FIFA Ultimate Team. Chalobah—who is oddly listed as a defensive midfielder on his card—received a 73 overall rating. The central attacking midfielder Havertz card has an overall rating of 84.
Thomas Tuchel is also one of the five finalists for the Barclay’s Manager of the Month award. The German helped guide his side to three wins in three, where they scored eight goals and conceded just one. Tuchel has done a brilliant job keeping his team focused on the task at hand during this unprecedented, hectic time in west London. It’s amazing to see him earn some recognition for this accomplishment as it’s been no easy feat to achieve.
A bounce-back was needed from the Blues following an inconsistent festive period that saw them drop out of the title race. Although both Liverpool and Manchester City maintain a double-digit point lead on Chelsea, the Blues have a game in hand on the pair that could see them pull within seven and eight points respectively. Anything can happen with nine games left to go.
Lastly, Chelsea represents 25% of March’s Budweiser Goal of the Month nominees list. Reece James is the first entry for the Blues with his worldie at Turf Moor. The goal marked James’ return from injury in the Premier League; it was his first in the league since his brace on October 30 at St. [Reece] James’ Park. Speaking of the Magpies, Havertz finds himself in the spotlight once again for his stunning late winner at home against Eddie Howe’s men. The 22-year-old sent Stamford Bridge into a frenzy as his goal at the death sealed a huge three points against a stubborn Newcastle squad. While neither goal is expected to win—thanks, Cristiano Ronaldo—the importance of each cannot be overstated.
