Chelsea takes on Real Madrid in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League semifinals on Tuesday at the Santiago Bernabeu. Thomas Tuchel’s side was soundly defeated, 3-1, by Los Blancos in the first leg at Stamford Bridge. They face an almost impossible task in the away tie as they try to keep their title defense alive. Karim Benzema stole headlines with his hat-trick in west London, but lost in the shuffle was the fact that the home side actually played quite well aside from the momentary lapses in concentration.

One doesn’t need to look too far back to find the last time the Blues defeated Real Madrid by two goals. Their 2-0 win over Zinedine Zidane’s side in last season’s Champions League campaign booked their place in the final for the first time since 2012. We all know what happened next. Nevertheless, this is a different opponent with a new, more experienced manager in Carlo Ancelotti. The Italian has been around the block a few times, he knows how difficult it’ll be to keep his visitors silent for 90 minutes. Simply put, Chelsea has a mountain to climb on Tuesday.

Can Tuchel’s men pull off an improbably comeback for the ages at the Bernabeu?

Here is how The Pride of London team sees the contest playing out:

Caden Charpentier: 0-3 Chelsea

No away goals, so Tuchel leads the Blues to the Champions League semifinals once again. There is no way after the performance over the weekend that Chelsea does not come out firing on all cylinders. All this team needed was one spark. Now that it found it, this defense will step up and show the world how good it can be. The Blues’ attack—led by Mason Mount—will dice up the Real Madrid back line. This is without a doubt an optimistic prediction, but if you manifest it, it will come true.

Joseph Joe: 0-2 Chelsea (CHE wins on penalties)

A bit adventurous there, right? Real Madrid has been excellent at home this season, most recently with a 2-0 win over Getafe in its last home match. But we can’t discount the Blues’ away form this season either. Chelsea has been red hot on the road this year. I expect the Blues to score two consecutive and unanswered goals. They will then take this match into extra time and win on penalties. Let’s see how it really goes.

Tan Yi Hao: 1-2 Chelsea

Gabe Henderson: 1-2 Chelsea

I really want to believe. I was on Tuchel’s level of believing in the Blues last Wednesday following the defeat. I thought there was absolutely no way that Chelsea struts into the Santiago Bernabeu and overcomes a 3-1 deficit. Not after the performance in the first leg. I’ve managed to talk myself into it becoming a possibility over the last few days—as fans do when waiting for a huge match.

However, the last time I made that mistake, the Blues were soundly beaten by Lionel Messi and Barcelona in the 2018 Round of 16. There is another Ballon d’Or candidate opposing the visitors this time around in Benzema and I think he’s too good to be contained for 90 minutes. Chelsea strikes first to add to the tension in the Spanish capital before Benzema pulls one back early in the second half. Tuchel’s men fully commit to going forward and get another goal for their efforts in the process. Unfortunately, I think they’ll fall just short.

It all honestly depends on which visiting team shows up. The Blues are capable of beating any team on the planet on their day. The flip side is that when they aren’t, they get battered by Brentford and hit for four goals in the second half.

This is an incredibly long prediction—easily the longest I’ve ever done—and I apologize for building up the anticipation to end it with a prediction that Chelsea’s Champions League run comes to an end here. Do I think it’s possible that the Blues pull off the impossible? Absolutely. Do I believe they’ll leave their all on the pitch at the Bernabeu? You betcha. Do I think they’ll overcome a two-goal deficit against the world’s biggest club? It’s improbable, but I would like nothing more.

Come on you Blues!

Kevin Peacock: 0-2 Chelsea (CHE wins in extra time)

Once again, the Blues find themselves with their backs against the wall and a Champions League exit staring them in the face. There’s no doubt it will not be easy to progress to the next stage, but Chelsea is not the holder of the competition for no reason. Clear the air talks between Tuchel and the players appeared to have the desired effect at the weekend. If everyone is back on track, Real Madrid—who didn’t look anything too spectacular last week—may crumble. Perhaps that’s false optimism but you should never give up on any Chelsea team until the final curtain has fallen.
