Just when Chelsea fans thought their team had comfortably secured a top four spot, the Blues contributed to their own downfall. Their closest rival, Arsenal, had lost three Premier League games in a row when Chelsea welcomed the Gunners to Stamford Bridge. The hosts gifted the north London side the game, along with four goals, all of which came from individual mistakes by Thomas Tuchel’s players. Even though some fans would say that the club’s five-point gap with a game in hand is enough, the reality is that the Champions League spot is far from secure.

The Blues are struggling for form, especially at Stamford Bridge, so this side can drop points irrespective of which team they face on any given day. Mathematically, the club requires 14 points from the remaining seven fixtures to secure a top four place. However, seeing as the Gunners still have games against Tottenham and Manchester United, let’s just assume that the 70-point mark will be enough in the grand scheme of things. Unfortunately, if Wednesday’s performance is any indication of how the season is about to end, all Chelsea fans will need to hold their breath.

As for this weekend’s visitor, West Ham, the Irons are flying high right now. The squad from the other side of the English capital is into the semifinals of the Europa League, preparing to face German side, Eintracht Frankfurt. West Ham is also just five points adrift of fourth place in the Premier League having played a game more than Arsenal and Spurs. Therefore, the Irons’ chances of securing a top four finish are rather slim. Regardless, West Ham would definitely love to do a league double on its west London rival this season.

The past has seen Chelsea and West Ham split the series over the last six meetings, including a win in the reverse fixture this season. This clearly shows the meteoric rise of the Irons under David Moyes. West Ham now has a fairly good chance to win the Europa League and play in the Champions League next season, hopefully alongside the reigning Champions of Europe.
