Five most impactful Chelsea players of the Roman Abramovich era
3. Frank Lampard (Central midfielder)
Frank Lampard arrived at Chelsea from West Ham United in the summer of the 2001/02 season. He made his debut that season. Lampard was so prolific that many found it difficult to believe he was a central midfielder—the confusion is understandable. The Englishman was key to every good thing that happened at the club for the first 14 years of the Abramovich era. He played key roles in nearly every trophy won while he was at the club. Lampard’s intelligence meant he knew just how to affect contests in a way the game needed at the time. He was also very good at arriving in the box and positioning himself in spaces that allowed him to score so many goals.
Lampard ranks top six for most goals and most assists in Premier League history, not bad for a midfielder. He was truly special. Lampard was one of few players many refer to as part of the “Old Guard” for the Blues, as well. The players referred to as the Old Guard were as impactful on the pitch as they were off it. Lampard is one of few Chelsea players who was not only a legend of his club and in his domestic league, but also in the game as a whole due to his contributions.
Lampard arrived before Abramovich took over, so for this piece, only his appearances under Abramovich count, not just all Chelsea appearances. Lampard left Chelsea having made 547 appearances in the Abramovich era. He was runner-up in the 2005 Ballon d’Or when Ronaldinho won it. He played key roles in 13 major trophies for the Blues; including three Premier League titles, four FA Cup titles, one Champions League title and one Europa League title. Lampard truly gave everything to the club.
Lampard still holds the record for most goals in the club’s history (211). He epitomized everything Chelsea stood for as both a player and later a manager, although he was infinitely more successful in his role on the pitch. Lampard’s place on this list was never in doubt due to his overall impact.
