Mason Mount (No. 19) Right winger, England

Thomas Tuchel had very encouraging—if obvious—words for Mason Mount in the aftermath of the FA Cup final. Tuchel mentioned Mount’s record and the importance of his game. Tuchel said the penalty miss would not change the way he feels about the former Derby County player. Note, though that Tuchel did not pretend that Mount had a good game, neither did he say “Mount is not the reason we lost.”

Those things would be untrue because the definition of the penalty shootout literally means that the player who misses in ‘sudden death’ is the reason you lose the shootout. Of course, Mount should not be abused for missing a penalty because that happens all the time and penalty misses are as common as fouls and clearances. What is dishonest is pretending that he played well against the Reds, which he did not.

Romelu Lukaku (No. 9) Striker, Belgium

Romelu Lukaku‘s haters would rejoice in the fact that he didn’t score in the FA Cup final as they think it would mean a return to the line-up for Kai Havertz. Havertz is injured though, but even if he wasn’t, he wouldn’t have started. Lukaku had nothing to work with in that game and the fact that he scored three goals in his last two league games with just one clear-cut chance should indicate to his teammates that all he needs is chances. Any type of chances.

Christian Pulisic (No. 10) Left winger, United States

Christian Pulisic was Chelsea’s best forward in the FA Cup final. He created a clear-cut chance for Alonso and completed four out of six dribbles. He created two chances, but he did miss a clear-cut chance himself. The American was in a very good position to slot home from Hakim Ziyech’s superb cross, if he had just gotten a toe to it, but Trent Alexander-Arnold got there just before him. He has earned another start at least.
