Now that the Chelsea Women’s Player of the Year, Sam Kerr, has been named, it is time to take a look at the moments that made this past season special. Many games resulted in jubilation and/or relief for the Blues throughout the season, but there was no shortage of challenges along the way. From the collapse against Manchester City in the Conti Cup final to a completely uncharacteristic performance that put the Blues out of the Champions League, there is no need to shy away from those season-defining moments.

It would be remiss of me not to discuss all of the remarkable and exhilarating moments during the 2021/22 Chelsea Women’s season. From stunning Sam Kerr goals to defense masterpieces headed by Jess Carter in the back line, so many instances highlighted why this year’s team will be cemented in Chelsea Football Club’s lore.

Here are the top-five most memorable contests of this past season for Emma Hayes’ side:

5. Jan 26, 2022: Chelsea vs West Ham (WSL)

This may seem like a possibly surprising pick given the time of the contest, and the outcome, but the performance was extraordinary. The Blues were coming off of an odd scoreless draw against a Brighton side that was starting to fade into a regression late in the season. Meanwhile, the Hammers headed west after a convincing 3-0 win over Everton. A win on its home turf would move Chelsea within one point of Arsenal at the top of the table.

This match was possibly the Blues’ best defensive outing of the season as West Ham could not muster up a single shot on target throughout the entirety of the contest. The prolific defense led to a plethora of chances from the wings and through the middle of the park from Sophie Ingle, Guro Reiten and Jonna Andersson from the left flank.

Bethany England would score her historic 50th goal in the WSL to open the scoring as Chelsea’s attack was simply relentless the entire match. Goalkeeper Anna Leat was busy all night between the sticks as she faced 10 shots on net from the 19 that the Blues fired toward the target. It was without a doubt not the most efficient afternoon for Chelsea, but the Blues used their physicality to wear down the Hammers and create some quality chances through many moments of individual brilliance.

Two world class finishes propelled the Blues to a 2-0 victory after a disappointing draw the following week. That match was after Chelsea allowed the Hammers to put two past it in the Conti Cup quarterfinal. To see this resilient team piece together one of the best defensive performances of any Women’s Super League club this season was extraordinary. It gave the Blues plenty of momentum to then string together four straight wins, and eventually push for the title.
