4. Sept. 26, 2021: Chelsea at Manchester United (WSL)

It would be easy just to pick games at the end of the season when the team was lifting trophies, but to get a complete look into the year as a whole, you must start all the way back at the beginning. Chelsea was coming off a quality win against a sub-par Everton team at home following a defeat to Arsenal in the first league game of the year. The Blues were still looking for that statement win, that victory to set the tone for what was going to unfold in the rest of the season. The loss to the Gunners to kick off the year was not what Hayes was looking for given all of the hype heading into the 21/2022 campaign following the record-breaking year that it followed. Going on the road against a team on the rise at the beginning of the season made it known to the rest of the WSL that this Chelsea team was in it for the long haul.

The Blues scored six goals and five players found the back of the net on the afternoon. There were nine shots on target for Chelsea in all, and a whopping six of them made it past goalkeeper Mary Earps. It was by far the Blues’ most efficient day at the office, and while some games in the future put up a greater number on the scoreboard, this was the match that started it all. As the world saw in the final contest of the league season, Manchester United is a quality team with plenty of talent at both ends of the pitch. To see that team allow six goals in one game is credit to the opponent. It ended up being the most goals the Red Devils allowed in a single match all season, which is pretty unsurprising given the circumstances.

The Blues were taking on a team that was coming off of two wins, and just two minutes into the match, Fran Kirby had a tap-in goal. A world class individual strike by Pernille Harder and multiple link-up attacks between Kirby and Kerr capped off what would turn out to be one of Man United’s most painful days of the entire season. A relentless display of offensive talent from the defending champions brought a team that was flying high down a few pegs by simply annihilating the back line of Man United in the early season contest.
