Chelsea will benefit from the Champions League final result
Chelsea’s reign as the Champions of Europe officially came an end on Saturday evening after 364 wonderful days at the pinnacle of the continent’s club ladder. The Blues passed the torch on to the most successful team in the history of the UEFA Champions League, and the club who knocked them off their perch in the quarterfinals, Real Madrid. Los Blancos captured their record 14th title in Paris to extend their lead at the top of the trophy charts to double up the next closest challenger, AC Milan’s, seven UCL triumphs.
Fans across the globe—especially Chelsea supporters—rejoiced at the final whistle as Vinicius Jr.’s 59′ tap in at the far post was enough to see Real Madrid defeat Liverpool. The Reds end the season with just two trophies, the same number as the Blues, despite talking up the quadruple over the last few weeks. It was the best case scenario for Chelsea fans, especially considering their team couldn’t successfully defend their title. Luckily for the Blues, the joy of watching their domestic rival was not the only benefit that was a direct result of the final score on Saturday.
Chelsea is set to benefit from Real Madrid’s Champions League triumph
Chelsea is set to receive cash compensation as a result of Real Madrid’s Champions League win, and yes, you read that correctly. The 2020/21 European Champions—specifically Marina Granovskaia—inserted a clause in their deal with Los Blancos that if Real Madrid was to win the Champions League with Eden Hazard in the squad, the Blues would receive more money. It was one of the many add-ons that was tacked onto the Belgian’s massive transfer fee in 2019.
While Granovskaia may have had her fair share of slip ups over the years, the positives far outweigh the negatives. She’s proven herself as an expert negotiator and this is merely another piece of evidence to back up these claims. Luckily for Chelsea, the Russian-Canadian club director looks to be staying on for at least the near future. There were doubts as to whether this would be the case with her close confidant, Roman Abramovich, selling the club after 19 years.
Todd Boehly and his consortium will have their hands full over the next few months as they walk into a somewhat dire situation. After months of inactivity under government sanctions, the Blues are now in need of a rebuilding within their ranks. Chelsea watched helplessly as Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger departed the club for free this summer. Injuries throughout the campaign also exposed holes in the squad’s depth. All of this in addition to a starting XI that struggled to compete with Liverpool and Manchester City over the course of an entire 38-game Premier League campaign.
Luckily, Granovskaia will help get the best value out of every pound or dollar (maybe?) that Chelsea spends this summer. A little bit of extra cash coming in from the newly crowned European Champions won’t hurt either. Saturday was seemingly the perfect day for the Blues. Liverpool was defeated in a major European final, numerous former Chelsea players earned winners medals and a bit of money was sent to SW6 as a direct result of the win. It doesn’t get much better than that, unless, of course, the Blues were to win the Champions League again.
