Three shrewd signings Chelsea should make this summer

Now onto the midfield, which in my opinion needs a refresh with younger talent after last season’s struggles. The Blues have Conor Gallagher returning—which will be a huge boost—but they do not know what the future will hold for likes of Jorginho, N’Golo Kante or Ruben Loftus-Cheek. Both Jorginho and Kante’s contracts are up next summer (2023) and Loftus-Cheek’s in 2024. Saul will be returning to Atletico Madrid, and it’s not known how Gallagher will perform on the biggest stage with his parent club just yet.

Declan Rice and Aurelien Tchouameni are names on everyone’s lips, but they will demand large transfers fees, which won’t help as the majority of the budget will be going toward the defense. Therefore, it’s time for Chelsea to start adopting an analytic driven way of both scouting and signing players under this ownership. This means signing players for relatively small fees in today’s market and giving them a chance, instead of loaning them into the ground.

Keeping that in mind, what better place to look then the Eredivisie, which has provided the Premier League with some great players, but also some players who didn’t quite live up to their potential. Ibrahim Sangare is the player I believe the Blues should take a closer look at out of the Dutch top flight.

Sangare is a 24-year-old central defensive midfielder who plays his club football at PSV Eindhoven. His stats are not eye popping at face value, but if one were to look further, you can see that he is top class defensive midfielder. Another positive attribute he has is the fact that he can drive the ball forward and score, as well, which Chelsea desperately needs from the middle of the park. Sangare has been at PSV two seasons under the guidance of German manager Roger Schmidt (now the Benfica coach) and he has really flourished there.

He should not cost more than £30 million pounds (even that’s a stretch as his value sits at around £14 million) and I believe he would offer great depth to this midfield next season. Furthermore, with good coaching, Sangare can become a top defensive midfielder and potentially even a long-term replacement for Kante sometime in the near future.
