3. Angelino (RB Leipzig)

Angelino is another left [wing]back option that Chelsea should consider this summer. The Spaniard currently plays mainly as a left wingback for RB Leipzig. He had a very good 2021/22 season where he helped Leipzig to a fourth place finish in the Bundesliga. He, like Sosa, was not great defensively. However, Angelino was a reliable source of chances though.

He created an average of two chances per 90, also ranking in the 93rd percentile or higher for assists per 90 and expected assists per 90. This is in addition to the versatile defender receiving an impressive 3.6 progressive passes per 90, though not as impressive as Alonso’s 4.6. Angelino completed an impressive 1.3 crosses into the penalty area per 90 last season too. He also created 11 big chances, which wasn’t the most for RB Leipzig, but it is still an impressive tally nonetheless. In fact, no Chelsea player created as many as 11 big chances in the league. Angelino averaged 3.2 shot-creating actions per 90, which is especially good for a fullback.

The Leipzig man made 0.4 goal-creating actions per 90, which is also very good for a fullback and on par with Alonso for Chelsea last season in the Premier League. Angelino would be a very fitting signing because if Chilwell happens to come back firing on all cylinders, he can just be a rotational piece/back-up to the Englishman without any issues. His playing style suggests that he’d be capable of doing a very good job for the Blues should they need to play him in Chilwell’s place until Chilwell is fully match fit. Angelino signed a new contract at the start of last season and the contract runs until 2025, which would make a potential deal with Leipzig very complicated. He’d be the perfect addition to Chelsea though because he’s not likely to kick up dust if he doesn’t start every week and he can play in numerous different formations and roles.
