Tuchel and Boehly want Lewandowski at Chelsea as striker’s stance revealed
Nick Purewal claims Blues boss Thomas Tuchel and ownership front man Todd Boehly – working as a recruitment head as well, presently – would “jump at the chance” to make a marquee signing such as Robert Lewandowski. Lewandowski openly desires a move away from Bayern Munich, though his candid preference would be Barcelona. Though, with all of their financial issues making it difficult to obtain new personnel, Barca may not succeed in getting the capture of the devastating Polish goalscorer over the line. Purewal, PA Media’s Chelsea correspondent, believes the West London outfit will pounce if given half a chance via the Blaugrana’s problems or incompetence.
We’ve already witnessed the mess the Spanish side have made of a prospective Raphinha deal – for themselves and CFC. Meanwhile the writer suggests that the Blues are focused on another, more versatile, unnamed attacker. Maybe that is Neymar, but I doubt it. However, the journalist also says Lewandowski would be viewed as a separate option away from any existing or upcoming switches to Stamford Bridge. What I take that to mean is that the Poland international is seen as a bonus: the Blues remain committed to other targets, but would certainly attempt to strike an agreement with ‘Lewa’ if at all feasible.
Should and could Chelsea land Robert Lewandowski?
Is Lewandowski the right man for the job, age and extremely high wages considered? I have to admit, I think he would be an absolute revelation on Fulham Road. Even at 32, an age which can test a player’s ability to still charge around pressing defenders and midfielders in a system like Tuchel’s, Lewandowski still brings huge energy to any team. Plus some of the workload can be applied to his youthful surrounding teammates. He is accustomed to counter-attacking play, which includes a press.
However, the main thing the legendary athlete supplies is goals, boat loads of them. Rather than examining the Bundesliga, in which he led goalscoring by some way, let’s look at a superior level of club competition: the UEFA Champions League. In the tournament, Lewa’s contributions for the Germans are utterly mind-boggling: in the previous four campaigns he competed in 34 UCL matches and notched 41 goals.
Obviously that tally was mainly produced in his 30s, cementing him one of the best top tier forwards even in career twilight. Whilst Bayern naturally wish to retain their premium asset, he only has one year remaining on his current contract. This means he can potentially leave for no fee next year.
Therefore, if a reasonably priced switch can be arranged by CFC this offseason, I shall definitely advocate it. While Paris Saint-Germain are a threat for the signature, the English club can cover wage salaries of this magnitude, although surely astronomical.
Nevertheless, Kai Havertz has proven that he is an exceptional false-nine, and Tuchel ‘does not view signing a No.9 as a priority’ according to Miguel Delaney. But, again, the same reporter asserts that CFC are ‘prepared to act’ if an opportunity for the Warsaw-born man arises. Both sources declare that Lewandowski is open to signing for the Blues. Without question, centrebacks must be being prioritised at the Bridge now. Two or even up to three rated defenders are hopefully due to arrive in this window.
