Preseason is one of the most thrilling times of the year under normal circumstances. Fans are able to get excited about the return of Premier League football as they watch their teams—and their club’s newest additions—take the pitch for a tune-up before the results begin to matter again. Everyone’s in a good mood in training and supporters have gotten time off to destress from the previous campaign. It’s all fun in the summer sun, especially when the freshness of an approaching domestic season calms the nerves.
Preseason brings back the first day of school excitement for fans as they get to see their favorite players meet their new mates, all while sporting their new back-to-soccer attire. Kit and training line releases are all of the buzz during preseason as well. Chelsea was late to the party this season after ownership and sponsorship complications pushed back the release of Nike’s newest creations. Even though there have been leaks, the only official kit marketed by the Blues thus far has been the newest home threads.
When will Chelsea’s 2022/23 away kit officially be released?
This prompts the question, when can we expect to see the away kits unveiled by Chelsea? The answer to this inquiry is actually relatively easy to predict. One would expect—based on pure assumption and a hypothesis formulated around the Premier League’s matchday shirt trends of the past—that supporters will see the Blues’ new away threads sometime this week.
Chelsea officially kicks off its 2022/23 campaign on Saturday from Goodison Park. The Blues will take on former manager Frank Lampard and his Everton side, who will likely be sporting their spiffy new, blue home kits. Therefore, it’d be safe to assume that Thomas Tuchel’s men won’t be wearing their fresh home uniforms as they’re also entirely blue. They will have to turn to their new away kits to prevent one of the most painful kit clashes in the history of the sport. This is unless, for some unknown reason, Nike will not be prepared to roll out the away collection in time. In that case, Chelsea would presumably put on its yellow and black away uniforms from the 2021/22 season. The Blues recently did this against Charlotte FC in their second preseason match.
If Chelsea does roll out its new threads this week though, fans are in for a treat*. The all-white look will be complemented by what are rumored to be navy socks and a funky design on the front of the shirt. The depiction will be similar to that of the collar on the Blues’ home jersey, which takes inspiration from the lion on the club’s badge. These teal/aquamarine stripes make the shirt look really sharp and give it a look that is completely unique. Footy Headlines shows that the top will be completed with a navy Nike swoosh, navy badge and navy trim along the arms.
As for Chelsea’s third kit, that will likely be unveiled a few weeks into the new campaign. The alternate uniform will not feature the badge design that links the home and away threads. Instead, it takes on a bold, new look with gold covering a majority of the shirt. Black and orange accents complete the unique look, which rounds out the new releases for the season.
*- I consider myself a kit fanatic, and the away shirt is my favorite of the Blues’ three this season.
