Chelsea at Everton predicted XI: 3-4-2-1 at Goodison Park
Reece James (No. 24) Right wingback, England
Arguably England’s best right back, Reece James made 39 appearances last season, scoring six goals and adding 10 assists in all competitions. The England international was with the squad on tour in the United States, putting on a show for spectators. Plenty of fans have their opinions on where Tuchel might use James, whether it will be as a wingback or as a right-sided centerback. Using James in the back three will be limiting his ability because he is deadly as a wingback with his pinpoint accuracy when crossing into the box.
Jorginho (No. 5) Central midfielder, Italy
The Italian maestro, Jorginho, played a big part in the signing of Koulibaly from Napoli. Last season, the Italian came third in the Ballon d’Or voting, which is a testament to how important he is for the Blues. All nine of the midfielder’s goals last season came from the penalty spot. Chelsea will need Jorginho’s ability in the midfield to track back, and also his creativity to open a defense with an eye-of-the-needle pass.
N’Golo Kante (No. 7) Central midfielder, France
Tuchel did not include Kante in his touring squad that traveled to the United States in July due to his vaccination status. Having a bit of a shortened preseason, the Frenchman scored a goal in his 2022/23 preseason debut against Udinese. Kante enters his final year of his contract at Stamford Bridge and he will be looking to go out on a high, should he not sign a contract extension.
Ben Chilwell (No. 21) Left wingback, England
Ben Chilwell is like a new signing for the Blues. The team welcomes the England international back after a “season-ending” knee injury in November ruled Chilwell out for the remainder of last season. After a couple of preseason minutes under his belt, the Chelsea fullback looks set to start the new Premier League season again. Chilwell was phenomenal last season when healthy. The left wingback scored three goals and added one assist in the first seven matches he appeared last term.
