Chelsea 2-1 West Ham: Lessons learnt by PoL

Benjamin James Chilwell
With one goal and one assist in 28 minutes of play, Chilwell’s introduction into the match was undeniably game-changing. Bringing industry and an attacking threat down the left side of the Chelsea attack that had otherwise been absent for large parts of the game, Chilwell was the team’s much-needed catalyst to get going again after Antonio had opened the scoring 9 minutes earlier. While Chilwell’s cross for Havertz’s winner was exquisite, his goal, in particular, was simply outstanding.
It was a goal that would not have looked out of place in a Youtube video titled “Neymar Jr: Best Goals and Skills”, such was the deftness of touch and quality of finish that was on display. It was a genuinely incredible piece of skill and a timely reminder to all Chelsea fans of what the Englishman can offer. To be forced to sit on the sidelines with a cruciate ligament injury for a period of 10 months is not easy for any professional athlete. Add to that the worry of not being able to return as a similar calibre of player and the fear that the club have effectively replaced him with Marc Cucurella, Chilwell’s high-impact cameo was nothing less than what he deserved after the difficult few months he has had to endure. It is also indicative of both his qualities as a player and, more importantly, his strength in character.
There are many that will be expecting Chilwell to hopefully kick-on now, and finally reestablish himself at the left side of CFC’s defence. What this means for new boy Cucurella, remains to be seen. What we know for certain is that this will be a fascinating tussle between two players of obvious quality throughout the season.
