The 2022/23 Premier League season is already mired with outrage and controversy. Poor officiating decisions and VAR incompetence have become commonplace in the English top flight, and for the first time since video replay was introduced, it feels like every fanbase is against the technology.
Chelsea was the beneficiary of a particularly puzzling call on Saturday, as Jarrod Bowen’s trailing foot caught Edouard Mendy and prevented the Senegalese shot-stopper from blocking Maxwell Cornet’s last-minute attempt on goal. The Blues will be more than satisfied with all three points, though, as well as their spot in the top six of the EPL table.
With this domestic chaos in the background, Thomas Tuchel and his squad will travel to the Croatian capital for their opening match in the Champions League. Dinamo Zagreb is coming off its fifth consecutive, and record 23rd overall, Prva HNL title having bested Hajduk Split by seven points last season. Zagreb is dominating in its home country yet again in 2022/23, with star forward Miroslav Orsic making nine goal contributions in eight matches already.
