Chelsea are apparently set to announce a brand new sporting director as the club takes shape in a fresh era. RB Salzburg’s Christoph Freund has a verbal agreement to join the Blues at the time of writing.

Before we begin, if you’re wondering what a director of sport (or sporting director) actually is, we will briefly explain. If you already know, you have my personal permission to skip this and the next paragraph. Basically, it is an executive managerial role with a sports entity.

The job generally oversees multiple teams within a football club; the professional also liaises with the board. Other disciplines might be: hiring coaches, fiscal matters, managing the schedule, key activities and events, and obviously overseeing progress.

OK, now let’s switch to the profile of the incoming ‘DoS’. CFC will appoint Freund at any moment, if reports are to be believed. Incidentally, he is arriving from RB Salzburg, Chelsea’s Champions League competitors this season. The Blues currently sit bottom in Group E, with AC Milan still to meet twice. The less said there, the better.

Back to Freund, who’s incredible claim to fame is bringing Manchester City goal machine Erling Haaland, Liverpool legend Sadio Mane “and others” to RCB. The 45-year-old would take over the interim position Todd Boehly devised for himself a few months ago.

Recently installed boss Graham Potter will work closely with the aforementioned pair; the former Brighton & Hove Albion gaffer approves of Freund. Monaco’s Paul Mitchell might also perhaps arrive at Stamford Bridge as technical director.
