Following the loss to the Reds, the goal-scorer for the Blues, Fran Kirby reflected on the game, and looked ahead to her team’s first game at Kingsmeadow, stating:

"“I think maybe we were a little bit too slow on the ball and we didn’t really create much. If we don’t create chances we’re not going to score goals…So we need to be a bit more creative in and around the box. Hopefully, we can build on that this week and put it into practice at the weekend…We both had difficult results on Sunday so we both need to bounce back and get a win…It’s always difficult when we play Man City, they’re a quality side. We just have to do what we can in training this week to put it right.”"

There are still questions if Taylor’s two young signings during the summer of Laia Aleixandri, and Deyna Castellanos can mature quick enough in the WSL in order to prevent this from becoming more of a bridge year for a team that was playing some of its best football towards the conclusion of the previous campaign. Compared to last season, Taylor’s squad is going to look a whole lot different, having lost Georgia Stanway, former FIFA Best Player of the year Lucy Bronze, Caroline Weir, the Lionesses’ all-time leading goal scorer, Ellen White, and Kiera Walsh towards the end of the window to Barcelona. Only two real contributors to the success of the Blues last season find themselves at other clubs to begin the 2022/23 campaign.

Last weekend, the former Chelsea midfielder, Laura Coombs scored half of her total number of goals last season against Villa including a world-class finish with her right foot in the second half. Coombs helped the Blues to their first-ever major trophy victory back in 2015 in the FA Cup final against Notts County, coming on in the final minute of the match for club legend Ji So-yun. With some of the speed and quickness that City possesses in the final third, the backline is going to be tested to the limit. One of the weaknesses of Chelsea last season was quicker players getting in behind the defense, but with the addition of Kadeisha Buchanan, that issue should be patched up.
