Fabrizio Romano confirms Chelsea owners backing Graham Potter
In spite of an increasing number of unhappy Chelsea supporters, respected journalist Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that the Blues owners are in fact backing Graham Potter as head coach.
Disgruntled and vocal fans are beginning to make their feelings known as Potter’s team’s results decline. The Englishman’s start at Stamford Bridge as well as on the road was almost flawless; Champions League progress was particularly admirable and of note.
But Premier League form deteriorated rapidly, not only when the Blues faced elite or big six outfits. Not to mention elimination from the League Cup, although that was a decent effort against a weakened yet still strong and impressive Manchester City side.
Nevertheless, the transition from widely loved Thomas Tuchel to the former Brighton & Hove Albion gaffer would never be instantaneously and wholly successful. A ‘work in progress’ is an accurate phrase to apply. The current CFC gaffer deserves at least a couple of transfer windows before being properly judged, if not a few seasons to truly show what he can do.
Though chairman and part owner Todd Boehly may step in before then if he sees the Potter project as no longer viable. We know how quickly EPL fortunes and standing changes – just look at Brendan Rodgers’ roller coaster ride which has once again ascended with Leicester City.
PoL is merely aware that the American businessman can and will act decisively if he feels the move is necessary. However, Boehly is seemingly backing his appointment long-term, as reported by The Athletic and famed reporter Fabrizio Romano. The latter claims that CFC hierarchy consider Potter the right man for the job.
Chelsea stars soon-to-be featuring at the World Cup
Host nation Qatar begin proceedings of the 2022 World Cup, as is customary. They meet Ecuador on Sunday afternoon, United Kingdom time, with matches subsequently resuming on the following Monday.
England are actually next up after the opening encounter, and we could potentially see three Chels’ stars in that game. Will Raheem Sterling, Mason Mount or Conor Gallagher see action versus Iran in the initial Group B outing? Possibly.
Mount is a likely starter under Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate, while Sterling’s uneven form could see Man City’s Phil Foden or Bukayo Saka of Arsenal steal his starting spot. Meanwhile Gallagher is probably at the tournament as a backup midfielder.
