Chelsea vs Spurs preview: CFCW head to the Bridge
Skinner’s side is currently sitting in fifth in the Women’s Super League table, having won three out of its last four matches in all competitions. Following a poor showing in the Women’s Cup over in Louisville, Kentucky in the preseason, Spurs have taken care of business against the clubs they should. Tottenham has begun with wins against Leicester City, Liverpool, and Brighton and Hove Albion, but losses to powerhouses Arsenal and Manchester City see Spurs three points behind fourth position.
Tottenham is led by former Blues legend Drew Spence who leads Spurs in goals in the WSL with three along with veteran Ashleigh Neville. Most of the numbers that Spurs have put up so far this season have been skewed due to an 8-0 win over a reeling Brighton team that had just recently lost its head coach of five years. Outside of that match, Spurs has only found the back of the net three times, and one of them was an own goal against the recently promoted Liverpool.
Spurs are in the bottom five in the WSL for expected goals per 90 minutes, averaging under one expected goal. The additions of Celin Ildhusoy from PSG, Amy Turner from the Orlando Pride in the NWSL, and former Everton midfielder Angharad James this past summer including Spence attempt to build on one of the most exhilarating seasons in club history. The beginning of Tottenham’s campaign may be filled with more of the same results against mediocre opponents, but Spurs now seeks to challenge the teams in the top four, starting with the Blues.
