12 current Chelsea players were called up by countries participating in the 2022 World Cup and 10 of them featured in the first round of games. The performances were varied indeed, with some playing very well, some scoring, and others having performances to forget. An opportunity to represent your country is one every player takes seriously, even more so at a competition as important as the World Cup. Therefore it goes without saying that the athletes all gave their best. Here’s how the Blues performed.

Edouard Mendy (Goalkeeper) Senegal

Mendy was generally having a good game for Senegal, until the 85th minute when everything fell apart. He was quite dominant, commanding his box, pulling crosses out of the air, and instructing his defenders throughout the game. Unfortunately, all that was nearly forgotten when in the 85th minute, when Frenkie De Jong sent in a well-weighted cross between Senegal’s two centerbacks right into an area that meant Mendy had to get to the ball before Cody Gakpo, as difficult as that was. He didn’t. He got there the second Gakpo had already headed the ball into an empty goal. The CFC keeper also made another punch that saw the ball go back into play, and no one reacted faster than Davy Klassen who scored the rebound. Needless to say, Mendy was one of the players that had a match to forget.
