Mason Mount (Attacking Midfielder) England

Mount played as an attacking midfielder for England against Iran. He was solid, but he wasn’t great. He helped in possession, though Iran was so poor it’s still difficult to determine whether the scoreline was more down to England’s brilliance or Iran’s complete flatness. Mount’s work rate was the most impressive, winning 7/9 ground duels for the Three Lions. He created just one chance and won four fouls. He neither scored nor assisted nor deserved to.

Raheem Sterling (Left Forward) England

Sterling was superb for England in the first round of games and in fact, performed the best out of all the Blues players that were on duty. He scored and assisted for Gareth Southgate’s men en-route to their 6-2 over Iran. The former Liverpool and Manchester City winger completed 2/3 dribbles, but he only won 3/8 duels. His movement was key for England, as Harry Kane kept dropping off and to the wide areas to try to get the ball o the center. Sterling made this system work as he occupied the spaces Kane vacated.

Christian Pulisic (Left Forward) United States

Pulisic was really good for the United States against Wales. He won four fouls and won just 4/11 ground duels. He slipped the perfect through pass to Timothy Weah, who took a first-time finish to score America’s only goal. Pulisic created two chances, including a big chance.

Hakim Ziyech (Right Forward) Morocco

Ziyech was OK against Croatia, winning 3/4 tackles despite being a forward. He attempted many crosses, some of which were close to their target, but none were successful. His performance may have seemed flat to some, but that’s because Morocco hardly ever got on the ball in the middle and final third. The few times they managed this, especially via the Blues wingman, they subsequently tried to get the ball into the box for Youssef En-Nesyri. Despite Morocco not having a lot of possession in promising areas, Ziyech created more chances than anyone on the pitch, from either side.

Kai Havertz (Center forward) Germany and Chelsea

Havertz was poor for Germany against Japan. He took zero shots, completed and attempted zero dribbles, created one chance, and was offside three times. He was definitely busy, but you cannot say he was effective.
