Chelsea have reportedly entered the transfer chase for the magnificent James Maddison of Leicester City, as another Premier League club withdraw from the apparent pursuit.

The Blues squad is clearly a work in progress. That contemporary status would have applied irrespective of whether Thomas Tuchel remained at the helm or, as is the current situation, Graham Potter arrived.

Due to vital, trusted and relied upon personnel leaving over the summer, the CFC roster was always going to be weakend. Injuries to crucial signings and stalwarts further hampered the team. There are areas of the side which require upgrading, as well as, at the very least, strengthening depth-wise.

While finding the right backup athletes to sign is an achievable task, finding, convincing and signing marquee acquisitions is an altogether difficult challenge which involves high cost. If Chelsea Football Club’s ownership truly wish to ascend back to the summit of the English top-flight and conquer it one day in the near future – heavy investment must be made.

One position that should be providing more goals and assists, not to mention general influence on the game, is No.10. Along with the presently inefficient and ineffective rightwing. I don’t want to point fingers at Mason Mount, Kai Havertz, or even Christian Pulisic again. Yet that specific trio – more accurately, the first two mentioned – are the main culprits.

Pulisic seems to pop up equally on both flanks in his rare outings over recent seasons. But Mount and Havertz are not showing nor producing enough to warrant starting at the moment, or to boost Chelsea’s lagging standing. Leicester’s Maddison is obviously one of the most eye-catching and consistently performing stars of the EPL. His addition at Chelsea in 2023 would be an immense capture.

Premier League club won’t battle for James Maddison in January, potentially aiding Chelsea

If journalist talk is to be believed, Chels’ are after the former Coventry City and Norwich City man. CBS’s Ben Jacobs recently said “Chelsea are looking at him”, referring to Maddison. This news will delight the west London outfit’s fans, of course. Does any truth exist here? We’ll have to wait to see if something tangible occurs, I’m afraid.

Although, it appears that the player may actually not desire a New Year switch. Therefore the update that Newcastle United won’t target a January move might not make much difference to the Chelsea cause. However, I imagine ‘Madders’ would certainly consider an offer from CFC for a plethora of reasons.
