Graham Potter has been saying the right things during his short Chelsea tenure, but that doesn’t mean he’ll get enough time at Stamford Bridge to devise, create and enforce his own style. If consistently good Premier League results do not occur, Todd Boehly will break his promise of allowing Potter to evolve the Blues.

Many people have asserted that the break in domestic football for the World Cup came at an opportune moment for Chelsea. And I agree with that opinion. The Blues had just lost four English top-flight matches in sorry succession. It couldn’t have gotten much worse for CFC.

The negative run began with a disastrous trip to current head coach Graham Potter’s former side Brighton & Hove Albion. Between those fixtures was a League Cup loss to Manchester City. Although, to be fair to the boss, Champions League progression was secured almost perfectly in the meantime.

But European success, even glory, wouldn’t guarantee Potter’s position in west London. That imagined scenario would go along way to ensuring that the 47-year-old is allowed a period to instil his footballing ethos. Yet if EPL form continued how it has been, even just for January, I believe Potter would be gone by February.

Now, that view may be seen as harsh, however, I can’t envision Todd Boehly allowing another three or four quick defeats going by without consequence. Hopefully the Blues revert to victories and January reinforcements bolster the side. But we just don’t know at the moment due to instability and a roster not up to CFC standards.

Would two seasons maybe help the Englishman to establish his style and compile a great starting XI? Yes I thinks so. Would owners sit by as Chelsea, let’s say, are eliminated from UCL knockout rounds and don’t qualify for the competition in 2023/23 because of a low EPL place? No.

The fact that Potter is making comments suggesting that he is ‘more confident‘ now that he has met with co-owner Behdad Eghbali during the World Cup break for reassurance, is not reassuring. This means Potter has been worried and we all know what the dreaded vote of confidence usually leads to.

Chelsea transfer speculation is becoming far more frequent now, with fresh rumours emerging daily as we head toward January

Yep, that’s right, expect to be inundated with Blues transfer ‘news’ from all the major and minor media outlets for the next five weeks or so. And it is The Pride of London’s job to delicately sift through the details in fastidious manner. Then we offer our opinions on legitimacy and suitability of potential recruits.

Though to be honest, as PoL said previously mentioned, Potter’s team does need reinforcing, desperately. At the time of writing, the Cherries clash at the Bridge is still a couple of hours away. Will we be more sure of the state of the squad when the final whistle blows? Yes, absolutely. Regardless of even a hypothetical resounding victory, I think we all know that signings are necessary.
