Chelsea have identified a recent World Cup winner as a transfer alternative if they do not sign Enzo Fernandez. Is Alexis Mac Allister up to the task?

To figuratively lay my cards out on the table, I’ll say this, I have been a fan of Alexis Mac Allister at Brighton & Hove Albion for well over a year. The Argentina World Cup winner is a special talent, and one who goes slightly under the radar. It took the biggest stage for his occasionally understated attributes to be noted and arguably flourish to their utmost capacity.

We all watch separate and rival clubs in the Premier League, especially with all the live coverage and highlight shows such as Match of the Day. Along the way, we pinpoint players who have impressed us and who may be ideal for our own teams. The Argentine was one of these examples for myself as I watch the wonderful English top-flight develop.

In all honesty, I think Enzo Fernandez is possibly a perfect acquisition for CFC at present with the legendary N’golo Kante sidelined as well as ageing. Not to mention the Frenchman’s existing contract rapidly expiring. Fernandez may perhaps bring the vitality, intensity and quality missing for the Blues at the moment.

Jorginho has shown himself up a bit too, of late by struggling to keep pace with outstanding EPL counterparts. In addition to that, the Italy international seems to have lost or misplaced some of his intensity, passion and drive to win at any cost. Denis Zakaria is proving a decent signing, yet his move is only temporary.

This could well leave a Fernandez-shaped hole in central midfield. But the west London side have supposedly identified Mac Allister as a prospective alternative incoming star should the deal for his countryman fall through. Now, the 24-year-old can certainly play in any position across the middle or even on the wing; he is proven at every level he’s played.

Although, I do not think Mac Allister quite possesses the tenacity and the will of Fernandez: the former has more technique-based and creative talents. So, the pair are not exactly the same, and offer different qualities in their foremost roles. For example, Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni used the Seagull in the centre or on the left; the ex-Argentinos Juniors man was effective in both deployments.

If Chels’ require a defensive midfielder, they should pursue Fernandez. If a versatile CM is needed, go for Mac Allister; he can be combative when necessary and is a complete midfielder. Either would be excellent additions.
