Chelsea are without a lethal and reliable goalscorer. To add firepower to the attack, Chelsea are studying the options in the transfer market and Barcelona forward Memphis Depay seems to be on the shortlist of the Chelsea chiefs.

Back in the summer, when Thomas Tuchel was in charge, the Blues signed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who had excellent relations with Tuchel. Soon the German boss was sacked and since then Aubameyang has just been a rotational option for Graham Potter. The injury to Armando Broja further complicated the matters and left Potter with no choice but to deploy Kai Havertz as the striker.

CFC signed David Datro Fofana from Molde but as things stand, the 20 year old is not an immediate solution but a player in the long term vision of the club. Fofana made his Chelsea debut in the FA Cup tie against Manchester City, coming on at the start of the second half.

Potter may choose to loan out Fofana where he can get regular minutes. According to Fabrizio Romano, CFC will make a decision on Fofana and a potential loan move in the second half of January. The 20 year old will get his chance to show his worth and impress the coach and convince Potter of keeping him at the club.

Chelsea ask about Barcelona forward Memphis Depay

Regardless of the decision made on Fofana, Chelsea must sign a clinical finisher to bolster their attack. Chelsea have netted just 20 goals in 17 games, the lowest tally in top 10 teams in the table. In order to address their goalscoring troubles, Chelsea have sounded out the agent of Barcelona forward Memphis Depay, as per the Spanish publication Sport.

Barcelona manager has made it clear that there will be no exits in January but Depay’s situation could change drastically in the final few days of the market. The Dutchman is behind the likes of Robert Lewandowski, Ansu Fati and Ferran Torres in the pecking order and is likely to get little playing time once Lewandowski serves his three match suspension.

English clubs Chelsea, Manchester United, Arsenal and Newcastle United are said to have asked about Depay’s situation. Depay is not Chelsea’s first choice but things can change in the span of next 10 days as the situation of Marcus Thuram and Mykhailo Mudryk becomes clear.

Depay does represent a solid option who brings versatility into the attack and has the killer instincts needed in a finisher. He’s valued at £17.6 million by Transfermarkt, but with his deal running out in the summer of 2023, Chelsea can get him on a much cheaper deal should the Blues decide to make a legitimate attempt to sign the Dutchman.
