Chelsea head coach Graham Potter has singled out new signings Mykhailo Mudryk and Joao Felix as top players. He says athletes are either born with special qualities or not by asserting that some can’t be improved by a manager.

Potter must be rubbing his hands together like a super villain in anticipation of what he can get cooking at Stamford Bridge for the final months of the 2022/23 season. With Wesley Fofana and N’Golo Kante eventually adding to potentially incredible signings, the prospectively amazing lineup makes the boss’s life a lot easier. We know he takes his work home with him because he is invested in the club.

The ex-Swansea City and Ostersunds gaffer has named two standout stars from training and what he’s seen previously: Mudryk and Felix:

"How positive are the impacts that Joao Felix and Mudryk made instantaneously? They are top players. Sometimes as coaches, we can think we turn these guys into top players, but they are top players. Joao and Mudryk, they understand the game and football. Then it’s just about helping them, fine-tuning it a little bit, the more we can get them into better situations the better it is for us and them. The signs are positive.”"

A break for Chelsea should be utilised to find Graham Potter’s team identity

One criticism that has been justifiably levelled at the Englishman, is that the contemporary Blues side has no clear identity to it. Again, this assessment is absolutely bang on accurate. The plethora of fitness issues obviously impacts this element, though it remains a very significant element indeed.

Yet the irony is that Potter’s Brighton & Hove Albion group could be described easily in their interchangeable, organised and deadly capacity. As with clubs leading the English top-flight, like Arsenal and Manchester City, there are notable assets and attributes which people endlessly and effortlessly name. Mikel Arteta’s Gunners are assured, entertaining and constantly improving. Meanwhile Pep Guardiola’s Citizens have led the way in the EPL for years through innovation, technique and cohesion.

Potter must discover distinctiveness in his current roster; an obviously ever changing, expanding and evolving squad, nonetheless. Hopefully fresh faces will ease problems and add positivity as opposed to creating more selection headaches in the opposite sense.

There is almost two weeks in between the Liverpool stalemate and the Fulham clash for the 47-year-old to find true individuality and instil his proper footballing modus operandi. A distinctive style got him this significant appointment in the first place. If you want my honest opinion, we are actually close to seeing a quite deadly Chels’ XI.
