Everton’s Anthony Gordon is nearing a transfer to Newcastle United, rather than Chelsea, after taking advice from former Blues player Ross Barkley. Apparently the Nice midfielder warned Gordon about London. The Pride of London assess the story and offer opinion on the situation.
Let’s begin with a bit of truth, or certainly a logical assessment: the Blues don’t need Gordon anymore. That’s if they ever did. Chelsea have now accumulated more wingers and support forwards than they’ll know what to do with. And I’d say every one is better than the former: Christopher Nkunku, Noni Madueke, Mykhailo Mudryk, the list goes on.
During the summer, I was fairly supportive of CFC’s pursuit of the Toffees man. Although the £60million touted fee was overly expensive, I admired what the young wingman achieved in the 2021/22 season with Everton. He wouldn’t have been a bad 2022 signing for the west London outfit, relatively.
However, Gordon’s performances have deterred me from advocating for him. Nor, for that matter, would I champion acquiring any personnel belonging the Merseyside team at present. EFC are in a bad way, and almost all of their players are underperforming; only Alex Iwobi could possibly be cited as partially inspirational at Goodison Park.
Blues interest in Gordon appeared to cool, especially as the summer ’22 transfer window expired. Nevertheless, rumours connecting Graham Potter’s side to the 21-year-old were recently revived. These articles may have risen merely as click bait; with Todd Boehly’s excessively wide net, anything remains possible.
Although, thankfully for the growing CFC roster, it appears as though Gordon will join Newcastle United. As you can see above, trusted reporter of all things transfer-related, Fabrizio Romano, revealed that the Magpies recently made an opening bid for the player. All parties are discussing a deal, with Newcastle “pushing” to find an agreement.
Interestingly, a former Blue supposedly warned Gordon off moving to the English capital. Ross Barkley is said to have told the Everton man that London ‘as a city is a distraction’, presumably in a chat the two must have had about Gordon’s future.
