After a staggering spend of over £300+ million in the winter transfer window, Chelsea have a potent squad capable of challenging on multiple fronts. With all the new signings done and transfer window wrapped up, CFC should now focus on the renewals of players like Mason Mount.
CFC have three contracts expiring this summer with N’Golo Kante, Thiago Silva and Marcus Bettinelli entering the final five months of their respective contracts. Chelsea are negotiating with Kante and at this point there are no indications if Kante will sign an extension or walk out as a free agent. Despite being 38, Silva is quintessential to Chelsea’s central defence and is by far one of the best players that Chelsea have got on their roster. The Blues might not extend Bettinelli’s current deal as they have lined up Gabriel Slonina as a replacement.
Chelsea are also paying attention to the contract situation of Mount. The Englishman has been an important part of the team ever since he returned to Stamford Bridge after his loan assignment at Derby County. Initially, under Frank Lampard, Mount showcased his exceptional qualities, making his presence felt in the attacking half, linking up the players in attack with relative ease.
Mount was equally involved during Thomas Tuchel’s tenure as Chelsea boss, playing 86 games, scoring 19 times and assisting 20 times over the span of 20 months. Mount was a core member of the Chelsea squad that lifted the Champions League trophy in 2021.
Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount contract update
The player’s contract runs till the summer of 2024 and a raise in his wages is long due. The player is on a £75,000 per week contract and doesn’t even feature in the top 20 highest earners at Chelsea.
Under Graham Potter, Mount’s importance hasn’t diminished. He is going through a rough spell in terms of output and performances but the former Brighton boss continues to trust the 24 year old at the heart of the midfield.
Chelsea and Mount have been in talks over a new deal with CFC eager to extend his current deal. The talks of an uncertain future are sparking up as Liverpool have been linked with a move for Mount. Should the Englishman not sign a new Chelsea contract, Liverpool are putting up a plan to sign him in the summer.
Fabrizio Romano has now given an update on Mount’s contract situation as nothing much has changed as talks continue between both parties. He also highlighted that Mount is not an automatic starter given the size of the squad and competition within the team.
"A lot has been said about Mason Mount’s future again, particular his role in the team now that Chelsea have spent big money on the likes of Enzo Fernandez and Mykhaylo Mudryk. I’m told negotiations are still ongoing between Chelsea and Mount, so let’s see how the conversation will go in the next weeks and months.I think it would be fair to say that automatic starters don’t exist when the competition is that high, he knows he has to perform at top level to keep his place, but nothing has changed. CFC will try to resolve the situation before the summer transfer window or else they could see a number of inquiries coming their way for Mount. The 24 year old is valued at €75 million by Transfermarkt and if a deal is not in place, clubs like Liverpool will test Chelsea in the summer.
