Mason Mount one of six stars likely to leave Chelsea
Chelsea Academy graduate Mason Mount is seemingly amongst a group of six high profile Blues who may be permitted to depart Stamford Bridge in the summer.
Todd Boehly’s Blues look drastically different to recent squads. Almost nothing is the same at CFC, pretty much everything has been altered. For the better? We don’t and won’t know the answer to that question for a year or two, at least. Expect more changes in the next while.
Christian Pulisic, Hakim Ziyech, Mateo Kovacic, Kalidou Koulibaly and Callum Hudson-Odoi might not be on Fulham Road much longer. Mere months, in fact. Along with those potential leavers is another big name: Mason Mount.
Chelsea star could be relinquished before start of 2023/24 campaign
At the moment, Mount’s reputation far exceeds his showings. Although the skill set, history and pedigree is there in the capacity of the Blues youth sides all the way through to the England international sides, World Cups and Euros, the midfield man is not showcasing these attributes. Nor is he living up to his lofty status. Form may be temporary, but so is a place on the CFC roster, let alone the starting lineup.
I am a fan of Mount, incidentally. Like many neutrals, it took the former Derby County loanee a while to win me over. Most observers, apart from the dedicated ones who actually watch Championship football, got to know and appreciate the Three Lions man before Gareth Southgate got hold of him, and post-Frank Lampard tutelage with the Rams.
Lampard did, however, advance the attacking midfielder at the Bridge. Over time, the work-rate – as clichéd as that reference is – as well as technique and finishing ability won over the majority of spectators. Prior to Mount’s displays completely declining in quality and influence, some odd members of the Chels‘ fan base had already turned on their player, for some reason. At the time, the latter was lifting trophies like the Champions League with the west London outfit. Strange.
Now there is more of a case to cash in on the 24-year-old. Supposedly, the Blues hierarchy is resigned to losing Mount. This update emerged following news of a rejected contract.
