Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic scored his first goal of the season, netting the third goal in Chelsea’s 3-1 rout of Leicester City. The Croatian has been in and out of the team, mainly because of injury issues hampering his season.
Kovacic has been one of CFC’s most trusted midfielders in recent times. He has been one of the cornerstones of the Chelsea side under recent managers but he could be facing an uncertain future at Stamford Bridge. CFC broke the bank to sign Enzo Fernandez in the winter transfer window and the club is looking to sign one more world class midfielder in the summer.
N’Golo Kante is close to signing a new deal with the Blues that will see him stay in London until 2026. Chelsea’s squad overhaul will continue in the summer which could see some of the current first team players leave.
Mateo Kovacic looking to leave Chelsea in the summer
Kovacic could be one of the players who could look for greener pastures. According to Sport Witness, the 28 year old midfielder has offered himself to Serie A giants AC Milan. Last week, Milan travelled to London for their UEFA Champions League round of 16 fixture against Tottenham Hotspur. The game ended in a 0-0 draw which saw Milan progress to the quarter finals on aggregate.
In London, Milan chiefs Paolo Maldini and Frederic Massara held a meeting with Chelsea midfielder Kovacic in a hotel. Kovacic offered himself to the Rossoneri as he weighs in on leaving Stamford Bridge in the summer. The Croatian international was at Inter Milan from 2015 to 2018 and knows the city of Milan well, remaining open to a return to the fashion capital of the world.
The Milan hierarchy have heard Kovacic’s desire and a transfer to the Rossoneri is not ruled out but first the technical and financial conditions must be met, only then can Milan launch an offensive for Kovacic in the summer.
The 28 year old will enter the final 12 months of his deal this summer and if Chelsea do not include him in the future project, it would be their last chance to cash in on the Croat and earn a sizeable fee from his sale. He is currently valued at €40 million but given CFC’s desire to reduce the size of the massive squad, Milan could possibly strike a deal for a lower fee as the overhaul continues.
Losing Kovacic would be a huge blow unless a competent replacement arrives through the door. The former Real Madrid man is bound to attract attention from elite European clubs if CFC eventually place him on the transfer market.
