Chelsea vs Villa, WSL preview part II: must-win situation
Following the most emotional victories in club history, Chelsea now have to turn their attention to a vital WSL clash against an in-form side.
Graham Potter’s side is not the only Chelsea team taking on Aston Villa this weekend. When Emma Hayes is speaking about serial winning, these are the games she is talking about. Being able to win mid-week matches in Europe and still find a way to secure victories in the league during the weekend is what separates good teams from the great ones.
The exhaustion level is going to be at an all-time high for the west London outfit. It was clear that it affected the performance of the side against Manchester City. This is not a bottom table side where the Blues have a chance to take a breath in the midst of the deep Champions League run. Carla Ward’s Villains are in riveting form, riding a eight-game win streak across all competitions into their second league meeting with the west London outfit this season.
Ward’s side is clearly not messing around this season, having not lost a league match since Dec. 11 against Arsenal. Currently only six points behind the fourth place Gunners, Villa is on track of its best ever season in the English top-flight. Led by Rachel Daly in the frontline alongside Kenza Dali and Jordan Nobbs in the midfield, the Villains are equipped with an immense amount of talent that has come together nicely so far this season. Villa had just two players with three or more goals last season. So far in the 2022/23 campaign, Ward’s side has five different players with that such total. The English international Daly has four goals in the last five contests in all competitions including an FA Cup quarterfinal winner against Man City in extra time.
