The Ukrainian shot the first effort right at Martinez and he failed to apply enough power to the second, making it a relatively comfortable save for the World Cup winner. This meant that Potter’s men created three big chances and missed all three, while their opponents created two big chances, and took one. Part of why CFC lost this game was because they could not convert the chances they created, and as much as fans want to blame Potter for team selection or whatnot, a failure to convert clear-cut chances is usually punished, and Chelsea was duly punished.

Marc Cucurella (No. 32), Left centerback, Spain

Cucurella played at left centerback in this game, and no, that was not why the Blues lost either. The stage where the error was made in the ex-Brighton & Hove Albion man’s case was when he tried to head the ball away but headed it into the path of Ollie Watkins instead. Unfortunately, the ball was headed for Watkins anyway, but he was offside, by heading the ball into his path, the Spaniard played the Villa forward onside. Cucurella is 1.75m, compared to Benoit Badiashile’s 1.94m, but the Frenchman in the side won’t simply have prevented that goal.
