Wolves vs Chelsea: 3 things to look out for
By Abdul Abdullahi
It’s been just over two years since the Chelsea legend’s dismissal at CFC, with an additional year of experience at the top flight with his work at Everton, it will be interesting to see what’s left in store for the rest of the season. With not much left to play for in the league, howbeit, any type of European places is better than nothing in my opinion, and the looming ‘los Blancos’ we have to take care of. Some may say it’s a right off, but, I believe Lampard would want to impress, and who knows, he may as well end up in the running of the vacant job for next season. Now going back to the task at hand, Lampard will be at the dugout to prepare the Blues’ to face against Lopetegui’s Wanderers.
Here are three things to look out:
Reappearances from familiar faces
Players such as Edouard Mendy and Mason Mount were really underuse under Graham Potter’s fever dream tenure. Especially Edouard Mendy, despite his drop of form after AFCON in early 2022, it is a bit unfair to completely drop him for the Spanish keeper, Kepa Arrizabalaga. The Champions League winner was brought in to replace KA in the first place under Lampard’s second season and was quick to impress. Even after his sacking, he was STILL a key figure in Thomas Tuchel’s reign of football dominance in 2021, picking up UEFA’s Goalkeeper of the Season award along with many trophies and awards. It’s up to FL whether to reintegrate the Senegalese back into the XI.
Lampard is quite familiar with Mason Mount because the two midfielders were at Derby County at the same period. Not only did Lampard loan in Mount from Chelsea to the former Championship side, ‘Mase’ became a regular starter the following season in ‘Frankie’s’ Chelsea side. The appointment of one of the club’s favorite may play a pivotal role in Mount’s contract situation.
"Frank Lampard on Mason Mount in his first Press Conference back at the club: “Mason Mount has always been a fantastic player for me. I know what I get from Mason. I want to see him perform on the pitch. He’s a huge player for Chelsea.”"
New manager bounce?
We’ve seen countless times from clubs go on a positive run after sacking their underperforming manager. A quick burst of form from everyone at the club wanting to impress for the new gaffer. Bruno Saltor was part of Graham Potter’s staff, and was seen as GP himself, hence why we may not have seen glimpse of luck on our side against the draw against Liverpool early this week, but that’s just me speculating. Lampard is a club legend, adored by many of the lads, and even the new boys.
Maybe the gaffer won’t go too heavy on tactics, he may just lay the foundations of unity and spirit amongst the squad which is really much needed. Steer the squad moral straight and hopefully however get the permanent job will have less work to due on low confidence. There’s not much left to play for, so playing without fear of failure is going to be on the Blues’ mind, they might not over complicate certain scenarios which is a dangerous weapon to have.
