Chelsea wise to talk to Mauricio Pochettino, says former Spurs player
After Graham Potter faced the sack in early April, Chelsea Football Club appointed former manager and club legend Frank Lampard as interim manager till the end of this season. However, Lampard’s appointment has not helped the Blues in any way. Under Lampard, Chelsea has lost four straight games and the team has looked clueless in these matches.
From how it looks, it’s clear that after the end of the current season, CFC will have to find a new permanent manager who can restore the club to glory. As per reports, the Blues too are focused on finding a solution to their managerial woes and are in talks with several candidates to take over the job at Stamford Bridge.
While the likes of Luis Enrique and Julian Naglesmann are favorites to become Chelsea manager, the London-based club is also talking to former Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino. The Argentinian manager might not be the best option as per several Chelsea fans, but former Spurs player and football pundit Terry Gibson feels differently.
Chelsea candidate Mauricio Pochettino experienced success coaching in the Premier League
During a broadcast this week, Gibson praised the Blues for speaking with Pochettino. He addressed the rumors of Pochettino being linked with Real Madrid and also spoke about why the Argentinian moving to Chelsea would be good for the club. Gibson said:
"“Chelsea are wise to talk to Mauricio Pochettino. He’s an elite manager, whether he is elite enough for Real Madrid I’m not sure. He did some great work with Spurs and that’s what is appealing Chelsea because he knows the league very well”"
While Pochettino and Chelsea are not strongly linked, it won’t be a surprise to see the club go ahead with the Argentinian if an opportunity presents itself. After all, Pochettino carries the vital experience of coaching in the Premier League.
Pochettino’s first assignment of coaching in the Premier League came with Southampton. In his very first season, the 51-year-old guided The Saints to an eighth-placed finish. This was the highest position Southampton registered in the Premier League since the 2002-03 season. Pochettino was highly credited for his work with Southampton.
After his stint with ‘The Saints,’ Pochettino moved to Tottenham Hotspur. At Spurs, the Argentinian manager displayed a brand of football fans had not seen before. He guided the team to a Champions League final, and had impressive finishes in the league during his 5-years at the club. This vital experience Pochettino has of coaching in the Premier League will be important for Chelsea.
