Chelsea are out of every competition now, the season is over and the club looks for a new manger to take charge, it begs the question that does the club go for a system that is proven and fits the club’s identity and culture or take a new approach and embrace a new ideology?

Former striker Didier Drogba said “It’s very hard for me to see how they got rid of certain people. They should go back to the principles and values they had. I no longer recognize my club.” As the club was knocked out of the UEFA Champions League by Real Madrid. Ex-Blues defender Antonio Rudiger and former coach Thomas Tuchel have also mentioned how they feel the club has changed a lot under the new ownership.

Historically, the west Londoners have been most successful under managers that have followed a solid defensive structure. The Blues have rarely been known for having golden boot winners in the squad. Only Didier Drogba has managed to win it twice, while numerous strikers have failed at the bridge.

From Jose Mourinho’s 2004/05 Premier League winning side to Antonio Conte’s 2016/17 record breaking 30 win blues to Thomas Tuchel’s champions of Europe. All these great squads have one common theme, a rock solid defense. ‘Defense wins championships’, this saying holds true for the blues as it has never been the goal scoring prowess but the impeccable structure in the defensive department that has brought glory to the bridge.
