Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic is facing an uncertain future at Stamford Bridge. The Croatian, who initially arrived on loan from Real Madrid, has now become an integral part of Chelsea’s midfield. Kovacic is one of the best midfielders in the Premier League and there is no shortage of suitors for the 28 year old.

CFC signed Kovacic permanently in the summer of 2019 and he has been an integral part of the setup under managers Maurizio Sarri, Frank Lampard and Thomas Tuchel. This season, Kovacic has been troubled by niggles but is now back to being a regular in the midfield alongside Enzo Fernandez.

Kovacic is set to enter the final 12 months on his current Chelsea deal and so far minuscule progress has been made over a contract extension. With his future not tied to the club and one year left on his deal, Chelsea’s rivals and some of the Premier League’s top six clubs are monitoring the situation.

Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic could leave in the summer

According to 90min, Kovacic’s agents have flown to England to hold talks with Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United. CFC are prepared to sell the Croatian if an agreement over a new deal isn’t reached soon.

His entourage will speak to Chelsea over the contract but talks have already been scheduled with other top Premier League clubs. Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United have expressed their interest in the 28 year old and are keeping an eye on the midfielder.

Liverpool are in the process of rejuvenating their midfield. They are also keeping an eye on Mason Mount’s situation, whose contract talks have stalled. Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has always been an admirer of Kovacic’s talent, so his availability will naturally pull Manchester City in the race.

CFC will not shy away from spending big bucks in the summer transfer window as they continue to look for midfield options. Declan Rice has been a long term target for the Blues whereas Southampton midfielder Romeo Lavia is generating interest through his stupendous performances in a Southampton shirt. Borussia Monchengladbach’s Manu Kone is also termed as a transfer target and if Chelsea are to sign any one of the aforementioned targets, selling Kovacic will help them fund the move.

A few weeks ago, Kovacic held talks with the chiefs of AC Milan and offered himself in the summer. If a new contract isn’t signed, the former Real Madrid player will likely be sold and clubs like Liverpool, Manchester United and Manchester City will be ready with a cheque. He is valued at £35.6 million by Transfermarkt.
