Chelsea Women v Liverpool WSL preview, right back to domestic play
Coming off of the emotions of a Champions League elimination, the Chelsea Women turn their attention to the WSL where the title is in their hands.
The second time’s a charm. What was supposed to be a match played back in January is now going to be a mid-week clash to begin the final month of the English football calendar. The two met for their second league contest of the season at Kingsmeadow on January 22, but after six minutes of play, the referees decided to call it due to a frozen pitch. It sparked a heated debate around the world of football regarding the safety of women’s players, and why the officials thought it was a good idea to go ahead with the match even though the playing surface was not up to standard.
The Reds played just five matches in both March and April combined while the west London outfit totaled 11 contests in three different competitions. Despite that, Emma Hayes’ Chelsea have two extra days of rest compared to the Reds having not participated in league play over the weekend.
Chelsea Women have come a long way since the first match of the campaign. Katie Stengel’s two penalties shook the English football world on September 18. Despite having battled through injuries from players all over the pitch, the Blues have lost just one league match since then. The Champions League may be out of the picture this season, but a fourth straight league title and third consecutive FA Cup crown are very much within CFC’s reach.
