Chelsea recognize £70 million man as midfield priority No.1 after Pochettino green light
Chelsea will sign a midfielder in the summer transfer window as they aim to bring in a competent midfielder to partner Enzo Fernandez. Chelsea’s midfield is expected to undergo wholesale changes as some of current crop of midfielders will leave the club. Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo is on Chelsea’s shortlist but signing him won’t be easy.
Chelsea midfield currently house Fernandez, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Mateo Kovacic, Conor Gallagher, N’Golo Kante, Carney Chukwuemeka and Mason Mount. Fernandez is an undisputed starter and Chukwuemeka is a young prospect. The likes of Loftus-Cheek, Mount, Kovacic and Gallagher face uncertain futures at the club.
Loftus-Cheek has said yes to a move to AC Milan but the club is yet to negotiate a deal with Chelsea. Gallagher could be sold to balance the books whereas Kovacic will enter the final 12 months of the deal in the summer and there are chances of him leaving as Liverpool, Manchester City and Bayern Munich all remain interested. Mount’s contract talks have hit a dead end and the possibility of him being sold is much higher.
Chelsea make Moises Caicedo as midfield priority
Although Kante prefers to stay at Chelsea, the Frenchman is yet to put pen to paper to his new contract. Chelsea are going to enter the market with the intention to sign a No.6 and they have a list of names that they are considering.
According to journalist Simon Phillips (via Caught Offside), signing a new No.6 is a priority for the Blues this summer. Pochettino has communicated that he wants a new No.6 and Brighton’s Caicedo has been made the priority target after approval from Pochettino and other decision makers at the club.
"A new number six has remained a priority for Chelsea this summer for some months now, and that has not changed/ will not be changing under Mauricio Pochettino. He [Pochettino] has communicated that he wants a new six as priority, and the double pivot in his system is the most important position.Unless there is a miracle, Chelsea won’t be landing Declan Rice this summer (it’s not over yet). And incidentally, yesterday I was told by a top source that Chelsea have placed Caicedo as their number one priority for midfield this summer. This has been approved by the decision-makers and Pochettino, Chelsea want Caicedo and will move for him very soon."
Another report from Sky Sports claimed that the Seagulls will ask for upwards of £70 million for Caicedo. A number of other clubs are keen on the Ecuadorian and it will not be an easy task to sign him. CFC will make attempts to sign Caicedo as he is a midfield priority target.
