Chelsea ends the 2022/23 season with a draw against Newcastle United. It has been a season to forget for the Blues. Finishing in the bottom half for the first time since 1996 and finishing below Fulham for the first time in 40 years. In a season where wins were hard to come by and performances by the team were forgetful, let’s explore the highs amidst a forgettable campaign.

Chelsea’s 3 best games of 2022-23 season

1 . Chelsea vs Tottenham Hotspur

A London derby that ended in a 2-2 draw during the second match week is probably the best display by CFC in the Premier League. The West Londoners dominated their city rivals throughout the game, Chelsea had 64% possession and controlled the tempo. Kalidou Koulibaly scored his first goal in the blue of Chelsea with a magnificent volley giving his team a 1-0 lead.Spurs equalized in the 68th minute via a Pierre-Emile Højbjerg strike driven low into the corner.

The Blues still looked in control and took the lead just nine minutes later as Reece James finished off a quick Chelsea transition. The home side was close to grabbing all three points but Harry Kane leveled it in the last seconds of the game via a corner, which was controversial, as just before it Christian Romero seemed to drag Marc Cucurella by his hair. Controversy followed the full-time whistle off the pitch as Thomas Tuchel and Antonio Conte got into a heated argument.

2 . Chelsea vs Borussia Dortmund

Down 0-1 from the first leg in the round of sixteen of the UEFA Champions League, the Blues hosted Dortmund at the Bridge in a must-win game. CFC was ready for this game and took the chances they missed in the reverse fixture. Graham Potter’s side constantly tested BVB’s defense with waves of attack and it finally cracked in the 44th minute as Raheem Sterling pulled his team level with a thumping strike.

Chelsea was fortunate to get a penalty call in their favor at the start of the second half and Kai Havertz scored the winning penalty after missing the initial one. The visitors tried to make a comeback but CFC’s defense stood strong and did not give away any big chances and punched their ticket to the quarter-finals.

3 . Chelsea Vs AC Milan

Potter’s side went into the game bottom of Group E hoping to get their stuttering Champions League campaign back on track. Chelsea won the game 3-0 and dominated Milan, who were missing key players like Theo Hernandez and Mike Maignan.

CFC asserted dominance from the start and Thiago Silva came close to scoring with consecutive corner kicks. Wesley Fofana scored a scrappy but deserved goal for the Blues in the 24th minute. Rafael Leao created the best chance for the visiting side as he went past multiple Chelsea defenders and passed it to Rade Krunic, who hit Kepa Arrizabalaga with his first attempt and squandered a simple rebound chance.

The West Londoners wasted no time and doubled their lead in the 56th minute as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang got on the end of a Reece James’ cross and applied a simple finish. James got on the scoresheet himself six minutes later(62′) and sealed the game as he blasted the ball in the net to make it 3-0 for the night.
