4. Erin Cuthbert against Tottenham Hotspur

Competition: Women’s Super League

Date: November 20, 2022

Nobody scores long-distance strikes better than the Scottish international Erin Cuthbert. In the first contest at Stamford Bridge, the midfielder put an exclamation mark on a first half of pure artistry by the west Londoners. In the 12′, Millie Bright’s sensational through ball to Sam Kerr led to the contest’s opening goal. The Australian nearly netted her second a few minutes later, but it was the Blues’ No. 22 who was able to double the home side’s lead.

Guro Reiten’s outswinging corner kick flew over the head of Buchanan, leaving Cuthbert wide open at the top of the box with plenty of room in front of her. The Scot used her chest to control the ball, and on one hop, Cuthbert swung her right-foot through the ball. The strike was hit with so much power and curve that Tinja-Riikka Korpela stood no chance between the sticks. Her reaction says it all as Bright lifted her off her feet leading to the entire team coming over to celebrate.

Since this happened back in November, it could have gone unnoticed by some, but the quality of the strike is evidently world-class. Cuthbert’s finish was recognized as the WSL’s Goal of the Month in November.

The Scot would go on to net another absurd goal from outside the box against Real Madrid in the Champions League a few weeks later, but in front of a packed house at the Bridge, this is one that is almost impossible to leave off the list. Other than that strike from the right flank against Los Blancos, Cuthbert’s goal against Spurs early in the campaign was her furthest goal by distance this past season.
