Chelsea 2022-23 season player ratings: Midfielders
By Malcom David
This season has seen a number of changes in the personnel of Chelsea’s squad. With 4 managers overlooking the team from the dugout this season and numerous players added in the January transfer window, the team has been pretty much unrecognizable during different periods of the season.
The midfield specifically is one of the areas that has seen a lot of change and transition throughout the season, whether that is due to injuries, formation changes, or managerial exits. As a result, the spine of the team that is supposed to serve as the linkup to the attack and the wall before the defense has been quite lackluster and inconsistent throughout the season.

Enzo Fernandez (7.5/10)
For his debut season in the Premier League, Enzo Fernandez has arguably proved to be worth every penny of his £106.7m price tag. The Argentinian midfielder has impressed with his long-range passing, ability to switch up play and seamlessly create chances out of nothing. In just half a season with the Blues, Fernandez has registered 133 accurate long balls in the Premier League along with an impressive 78.94 passes per match at a completion rate of around 89%.
Despite his elite qualities Fernandez is not perfect. For instance, he’s not the fastest midfielder out there, hence he can get outpaced in opposition counterattacks, but he has shown the ability to challenge with successful tackles during slower opposition buildup. The acquisition of a defensive midfielder to pair alongside Enzo next season will be key to unlocking his full potential and give him the freedom to boss the midfield next season.
