Chelsea 2022-23 season player ratings: Midfielders
By Malcom David
Jorginho (5.5/10)
Despite his move to Arsenal in January, Jorginho did spend half a season at Chelsea primarily as a first-choice midfielder. The Italian’s qualities are clear, a penalty maestro, poised and efficient on the ball and capable of line breaking passes from time to time. However, this season, Jorginho’s slow pace was exploited on numerous occasions, with opposing teams pressing him to death and forcing him into dispossessions and errors. His time at Chelsea was evidently coming to an end this season and the signing of Enzo Fernandez to revamp the midfield sealed his fate for a new chapter away from the Blues.
Carney Chukwuemeka (6.5/10)
In his first season at Chelsea, Carney Chukwuemeka was unlucky to only have 345 Premier League minutes in his belt, with most of those being substitute appearances. The 19-year-old struggled for game time this season but has been bright in his few opportunities showing good passing and ball carrying ability in the midfield. With the reported midfield revolution to the squad this summer, it’s hard to see Chukwuemeka getting more minutes next season and a loan to a mid-table Premier League club would be ideal for his development.
