Mauricio Pochettino will not reunite with £154m ace at Chelsea
Since Todd Boehly took over the ownership of Chelsea, the Blues have been making statement signings in the transfer windows. The Blues signed Enzo Fernandez, Raheem Sterling, Kalidou Koulibaly, Mykhailo Mudryk and other highly rated players in the last two transfer windows and now CFC could have a chance to jump into the race for PSG forward Kylian Mbappe.
Mbappe has sent a letter to PSG confirming that he will not extend his deal till 2025 and PSG are open to selling him this summer as they do not want to lose him on a free transfer in 2024. With PSG prepared to sell their prized asset, clubs have started to take information and circle around PSG.
Real Madrid are one of the obvious destinations. Mbappe was close to joining Real last summer on a free transfer but ended up signing a mega contract at PSG. Premier League clubs Chelsea and Manchester United have also been highlighted as potential destinations by The Times. Real Madrid continues to remain as favourites to land Mbappe but so far no offers have been made by the Los Blancos.
Chelsea will not pursue a deal for Kylian Mbappe
Incoming CFC manager Mauricio Pochettino has worked with Mbappe during his stint at PSG. Under the Argentine manager, Mbappe scored 67 goals and provided 34 assists in 75 games. Pochettino had a chance to reunite with Mbappe as CFC aim to bolster their attack. Signing Mbappe, who is one of the world’s best, would be a huge statement signing for CFC. However, a reunification will not happen.
According to journalist Ben Jacobs, Chelsea will not enter the race to sign Mbappe in the summer despite holding previous interest in the 24 year old. Perhaps, this is the best decision that CFC could have made.
In a tactical sense, Mbappe is not a pure striker, nor does he intend to be. He relishes the idea of playing on the left and drifting inside with his blistering pace. Chelsea need a ruthless goalscorer who can be a focal point in the attack. Unless Pochettino is willing to make major modifications to his system, a marriage between Mbappe and CFC won’t work.
In a sporting sense, CFC cannot offer any form of European football to Mbappe, who is one of the world’s best. The Frenchman will be inclined to a team that has realistic chances of winning the Champions League, a trophy that has eluded PSG’s hands despite pouring millions into making a world class squad.
The 24 year old is valued at £154 million as per Transfermarkt and there are very few clubs capable of paying such a high amount of transfer fees to PSG. Of course, there are plenty of perks of signing Mbappe but the negatives outweigh the positives and it’s best for CFC to not pursue a deal for the 24 year old this summer.
