Following on from a previous piece I did, assessing the best 3 transfers CFC could make this summer. I am now going to make my suggestions for the 3 worst transfers Chelsea could make this summer.
This will be based off of value for money, fit for the squad, and the positions of need. Of course, these are just my opinion, but I will try to justify each decision with statistics to back up my point.
3 worst transfers Chelsea could make this summer
The first transfer I am going to highlight is from a different angle, a selling point of view. The Worst transfer Chelsea could make this summer, is letting Levi Colwill go.
Brighton are trying to acquire Colwill from CFC on a permanent deal, and Chelsea can not allow this to happen. Colwill is an elite centre back prospect, who is left footed and has an unbelievable passing range. He is also only 20-years-old, and the sky is the limit for young Levi.
Colwill plays 85.94 passes per 90, and plays 5.16 progressive passes per 90, which will fit perfectly at Chelsea under Mauricio Pochettino. He has every attribute needed to become a world class defender, and play at the highest level for the next decade. As long as Chelsea provide him with the pathway into the first team, he will become a key figure at the club for years to come.
The second worst transfer the Blues could make this summer is Illan Meslier. I want to first point out I am a fan of Meslier, however, he is a young goalkeeper and is not the type of signing that will install belief in the backline.
Chelsea already have Kepa Arrizabalaga who has had his struggles at the club, and signing another young goalkeeper to slowly integrate would not help the team. Slonina has already been signed as a young prospect goalkeeper, and the next goalkeeper CFC sign needs to be a first team signing, who can lead the team and install belief in the defensive line.
Transfermarkt value Meslier at €22.00m, however, Leeds would be likely to require a bigger fee for the 23-year-old, and this would be an unnecessary, sideways move for Chelsea.
The last singing I am going to put forward for the worst signings Chelsea can make this summer is Jules Kounde.
After recent murmurs of Kounde already being an option for Barcelona to sell and raise funds, Chelsea’s name was thrown in the hat, probably because of previous interest. However, it would be extremely silly to go back in for Kounde, with the current situation and how last summer unfolded with that saga.
The Blues opted to go for Wesley Fofana, who is likely to be the right sided centre-back for Chelsea for the next decade (if all goes well). Kounde also chose to join Barcelona, there are many contradicting reports that Kounde chose Barcelona first, but also reports that Tuchel decided against a move for Kounde due to his height and fit for the squad.
With the likes of Colwill, Fofana, Benoit Badiashile, Trevoh Chalobah, Kalidou Koulibaly and of course 38-year-old Thiago Silva, Chelsea are more than stacked in the centre-back department for now.
