During the 2022 summer transfer window Chelsea beat Manchester City to the signing of 23-year-old Brighton defender Marc Cucurella. The deal was completed for a fee in excess of 60 million pounds and at the time, the Spanish full back had come off a brilliant Premier League campaign where he was named Brighton player of the year. He was highly regarded as a defender with incredible versatility both going forward and defensively, capable of playing at left back and left centre back.

However, Cucurella’s Chelsea career so far has been nothing short of underwhelming. In hindsight, the transfer was definitely a massive overpay. Nevertheless, the Spaniard was considered to be a reliable and Premier League proven option to serve as competition for the often-injured Ben Chilwell.  He never became that though, instead transforming into a shadow of his former self with the blues and never truly impressing considering his staggering price tag. With the club currently offloading several players to balance the squad and remain in the green for financial fair play, Marc Cucurella is a player the blues should considering cutting their losses on.
